Designing a bathroom with a small footprint has a unique set of challenges, the greatest of which is getting the most out of the space without sacrificing style and comfort. In today’s post, Bath Planet of Boston shares design tips that you can use when planning your upcoming small bath replacement.
Install Multifunctional Furniture
Multifunctional furniture are essentially furniture that serve more than one purpose, as opposed to those that are purpose-built. You’re probably already familiar with pull-out storage, bathroom mirrors that double as vanity cabinets, and hidden fold-out desks. Standard bathroom furniture can be replaced with ones that can be hidden out of the way when not in use — you can even have custom ones commissioned to better fit your bathroom.
Choose a Light Color Palette
Light-colored surfaces are more reflective. In small baths, this can be used to create a more spacious look. While white remains a great choice for this purpose, pastels and similar light hues can have a similar effect. Light blues or greens may even be preferable if white makes the bathroom look too bright. You can balance the color palette by adding accessories like towels, rugs, shower curtains or decor.
Let More Natural Light In
One of the benefits of natural lighting is, like a light color palette, it increases visual space. You can allow more natural light by having the bathroom windows replaced with ones with bigger glass areas. Alternatively, a skylight or solar tube can be installed to increase the amount of natural lighting in the bathroom. If neither are included in your bathroom remodeling plans, choose sheer window treatments instead of opaque ones.
Utilize Vertical Space
Make the most of the bathroom furniture footprint by installing overhead cabinets or wall-mounted shelves. Floating shelves can also free up floor space without sacrificing storage space. A wall-mounted toilet and sink can likewise clear bathroom floor space, however, you have to keep in mind that this will require significant changes to existing plumbing.
